Oscar Winning Director Milos Forman Has Died At 86

Milos Forman, a two-time Oscar winner for Best Director for his work on the films One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus has passed away. According to his agent, Forman passed away on Friday in Connecticut after a short illness. The director was 86 years old and was best known in Hollywood for his films that challenged authority with a satirical bent.

Milos Forman was born in Caslav, on Feb. 18, 1932. Both his mother, born Anna Suabova, and the man he believed to be his father, Rudolf Forman, were separately seized by the Nazis and were killed in concentration camps. Forman would go on to attend Film School in Prague and would make his first feature film -- a coming of age tale about a teenager entering the workforce called Black Peter -- in 1964. It was disliked by the Communist authorities, but it won an award at the Locarno film festival, allowing Forman to keep directing.

The director didn't arrive on the world stage until the release of The Loves of a Blonde in 1965. The film was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language film, but it didn't take home the prize. Forman's next film, The Firemen's Ball was likewise nominated for Best Foreign Language film the following year, though, it's satirical depiction of firefighting bureaucracy didn't sit well with the Czech Republic.

Soon afterward, Milos Foreman left what was then Czechoslovakia and came to the United States, which was more accepting of his satirical style than his homeland. When Warsaw Pact troops stormed the country in 1968, Forman opted to stay in the United States. His first American film, Taking Off, was a flop and it sunk Forman into depression. At his lowest point, he was offered to direct an adaptation of the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The movie, which followed a tale of rebellion in a mental institution, starred Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher and went on to win five Oscars -- including Best Picture and Best Director.

Forman's next two films, Hair and Ragtime, didn't leave as great an impression as Cuckoo's Nest, but Forman struck gold once again with the release of Amadeus in 1984. Amadeus followed the life of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and starred Tom Hulce. The film was nominated for a total of 11 Oscars, winning 8 of them and earning Forman his second Best Director award.

Milos Forman would go on to direct five more films following Amadeus, though, none of them were particularly well received by audiences. The People vs. Larry Flynt and The Man on the Moon were perhaps his most high-profile releases from that time. The latter, which followed the life of comedian Andy Kaufman as portrayed by Jim Carrey, was the subject of a recent documentary called Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Novelization Reveals L3-37's Ultimate Fate

Warning: SPOILERS for Solo: A Star Wars Story are ahead!

Solo: A Star Wars Story explored a lot of integral moments from Han Solo's younger years, including meeting Lando Calrissian. But the future Cloud City administrator wasn't alone when he crossed paths with the aspiring smuggler; he was accompanied by L3-37, an opinionated droid fighting who fought for the rights of her fellow droids when she wasn't co-piloting the Millennium Falcon. Unfortunately, during the coaxium heist on Kessel, L3-37 was gunned down, but her mind was soon after downloaded into the Falcon, and upon taking control of the ship's navigation control, she helped Han, Lando, Chewbacca, Qi'ra and Tobias Beckett escape the Kessel run. Thanks to the Solo novelization arriving next month, we know what L3's last moments were before she became something different.

Droids are different from intelligent life forms in the Star Wars universe, but one thing they share in common is a body, whether it's a humanoid-design or differently shaped. As revealed in the Solo: A Star Wars Story novelization excerpt posted on StarWars.com, when L3-37 awakens in the Millennium Falcon computer, she's disoriented, initially wanting to tell Lando Calrissian something, but then realizing she doesn't have a head and instead seeing everything through the Falcon's cameras. The ship's "voices" then greet L3 and catch her up to speed, and while L3 states that once she's in a new body, she can get back in the co-pilot's seat, the Falcon tells her it's not that simple. L3 has one of two choices: she can die with her last act being the successful liberation of the droids on Kessel, or she can join the Falcon and "be part of something much bigger." L3 doesn't want to become part of the ship, but after putting up some resistance, she learns that as the navigational computer's been rebooting, she'd already decided to join; she just has trouble admitting it. In her final moments, the droid feels that she's no longer just L3 or just the Falcon. They "are new."

While somewhat depressing, at least this excerpt provides added context to what happened to L3-37 during Solo: A Star Wars Story. If she hadn't decided to merge with the Millennium Falcon's computer, Lando and the gang would have died while making the Kessel Run, so rather than passing on, she had to sacrifice her individuality. If it's any consolation, as evidenced by C-3PO noting in The Empire Strikes Back that the Falcon has "the most peculiar dialect," it appears there's still some of L3 lingering in the ship. Of course, as we all know, Han later won the Falcon from Lando in a game of sabacc, although years later, Lando "reunited" with L3 when he piloted the ship in the attack on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. With Lando set to return in Episode IX, maybe he'll get to sit in the pilot's chair again one last time.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will be available on Digital HD September 14, with the Blu-ray and DVD copies hitting shelves on September 25. As for what else is coming up in the Star Wars franchise, consult our handy guide.

New The Equalizer 2 Trailer Features Denzel Washington As An Ass-Kicking Lyft Driver

Denzel Washington's The Equalizer from 2014 wasn't a blockbuster but it was a solid hit that made money, and these days that's all it takes to get your sequel greenlit. The newest trailer for The Equalizer 2 shows Washington's Bob McCall making money as a Lyft driver until he finds himself with a fare that springs him back into action. Check out the trailer below.

While the opening sequence of the trailer doesn't appear to be connected to the main plot, it's the focus here to remind fans of the first film, or inform those that missed it, that Denzel Washigton's character is not somebody you cross. When somebody drops a girl in Washington's car that has clearly been beaten up, he goes up to the room on the pretense of getting a new credit card, but instead takes down the entire room. While these guys are clearly violent, they're not trained like Bob McCall, so he doesn't have much difficulty in beating the crap out of each of them, selectively breaking whatever bones he feels is appropriate.

From there the trailer goes into the main story, which has already been revealed if you saw the film's first trailer. One of Bob McCall's friends from the old days, played by Melissa Leo, and returning from the first film, is violently killed. McCall decides to take revenge on everybody involved. However, it seems that whoever did this pretty high up in the government, as it means McCall will be going up against a highly trained contingent of military fighters in order to get his revenge.

The Equalizer 2 will be hitting theaters in just about a month and while it's not going to compete for the top of the box office with so many massive blockbusters coming out at the same time. There's a good chance that it will, once again, put up solid numbers and be a successful film. Denzel Washington is a star that will draw an audience and the action here looks like exactly the sort of the thing the summer movie crowd is looking for. If you're the sort of person who hits the theater most weekends during the summer, then this might be the perfect thing to keep you entertained before Mission: Impossible - Fallout comes out the following weekend.

Of all the various attempts that have been made to let aging action stars continue to be action stars, The Equalizer may be one of the more surprising successes, but when you've got Denzel Washington, you're halfway to success already, and director Antoine Fuqua takes you the rest of the way there. The Equalizer 2 hits theaters July 20.
