Robert Downey Jr. Factored Into Chris Pratt Being Cast As Star-Lord

However you may feel about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's one thing about the franchise that can't be denied: it plays the long game, and not just with what we see on camera. Taking into account the future also factors into casting. For instance, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that one of the reasons Chris Pratt was cast as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, in Guardians of the Galaxy was because they thought he would perform well opposite Robert Downey Jr. someday. In Feige's words:

We always cast for the movie we're making, but we also have an eye on the future. So when we were casting Chris Pratt, we needed the best Star-Lord, but at the same time, we said, 'We need somebody who one day might go toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr.' On the very first day of Avengers: Infinity War there was Robert, Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, and it was pretty amazing! There have been a handful of times in our ten years here at Marvel Studios where we have had to just stop for a second and pinch ourselves. That was one of those moments.

In its 10 years of existence (thus far), the MCU has recruited a lot of notable actors, some of whom have been propelled to stardom thanks to their performance(s) in the franchise (I'm looking at you, Chris Hemsworth). But Robert Downey Jr. definitely functions as the MCU's anchor, having performed Iron Man nine times, soon to be ten. So it's no wonder that Kevin Feige and the other Marvel brass took into account how other starring actors would do alongside him.

Enter Chris Pratt, who before joining Guardians of the Galaxy was best known for playing Andy Dwyer on NBC's Parks and Recreation and had appeared in movies like Moneyball and Zero Dark Thirty, but was nowhere near a blockbuster star. Before Pratt, actors like Joel Edgerton and Eddie Redmayne had tested for Peter Quill, but Pratt scored the role in February 2013, and like the other starring MCU actors, signed a multi-picture deal. No doubt there were numerous reasons why Pratt was deemed the right man to portray Star-Lord, but as Kevin Feige mentioned in the Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years book (via Comicbook.com), a big one was that they knew one day he'd be a good foil for Robert Downey Jr. in the coming years.

Marvel didn't announce its Phase 3 film slate until October 2014, so while some Marvel Comics fans were predicting that the MCU's Thanos would seek out the six Infinity Stones like his comic book counterpart, the public didn't know that Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II (later changed to Avengers: Infinity War and the still-untitled Avengers 4) were on the way. But the creative minds at Marvel certainly did, and even though the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are among the more self-contained entries within the MCU, Kevin Feige and his ilk knew that the Guardians would eventually cross paths with some of the MCU's Earthbound heroes, like Iron Man.

That moment finally arrived this past May, as Avengers: Infinity War saw Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, who flew away from Earth on Ebony Maw's ship, meeting Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Mantis and later Nebula on Titan, Thanos' dead homeworld. While the Avengers and Guardians both work to protect the innocent, the teams definitely have clashing methods and personalities, and Iron Man was especially exasperated by his interactions with the Guardians.

I can't say I blame Tony for getting so easily annoyed. While he was focused and doing his best to plan how to defeat Thanos, Star-Lord and the other Guardians took a more relaxed and practically bored approach to the coming battle. Star-Lord in particular kept getting on Iron Man nerves, from responding that he's from Missouri when asked if he hailed from Earth (even though Missouri's on Earth) to telling Iron Man that his plan actually sucked, as seen in the below clip.

Fortunately, eventually all the heroes on Titan coalesced like Iron Man wanted, and they nearly succeeded in removing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand. Unfortunately, after Star-Lord became enraged upon learning Thanos killed Gamora and started attacking the Mad Titan while he was subdued, everything went to hell. Once Doctor Strange gave up the Time Stone in exchange for Iron Man being kept alive, that was officially marked their defeat. By the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange were turned to dust, leaving Iron Man and Nebula as the only survivors on Titan.

That said, the story isn't over yet. Next year, Avengers 4 will show the surviving MCU heroes banding together to undo Thanos' genocide. How that will be accomplished is still shrouded in mystery, but by the end of the story, it's expected that most, if not all of the heroes who disappeared after Thanos' snap will be brought back to life. Keeping that in mind, perhaps we'll be lucky enough to have another hilarious back-and-forth between Star-Lord and Iron Man during the movie.

While nothing is 100% confirmed yet, it's looking like Avengers 4 will make Robert Downey Jr's departure from the MCU, so there's one more opportunity for Iron Man to leave a memorable impact on this franchise. As for Chris Pratt's MCU future beyond Avengers 4, he's expected to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but with that on indefinite hold following James Gunn's firing, who knows when we'll get to see Star-Lord and the gang in the threequel.

The MCU continues on March 8, 2019 with the release of Captain Marvel, and two months later, Avengers 4 will wrap up Phase 3 with a bang. One Black Panther Deleted Scene The Filmmakers Say Was Painful To Cut

Although it was released a month ago, the hype train around Ryan Coogler's Black Panther hasn't slowed down a bit. The blockbuster has broken all sorts box office records, and is a significant moment in pop culture and film history. While just about every frame of the latest MCU installment has been dissected and discussed, there are a few choice moments that Coogler and the film's editors had to cut out of Black Panther. Fans have been eager to find out about deleted scenes, and one has just gone public. Editor and Ryan Coogler collaborator Michael Shawver revealed one scene had to do with Okoye and W'Kabi. As he tells it,

Hands down the most painful scene to cut was [one] with Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya. Toward the end, after things go bad and Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan] is in control and all that, we're talking about, what are they going to do? What is Wakanda going to become?

It looks like Wakanda's supporting characters were originally a larger part of Black Panther, but some powerful scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. Although given the amount of world building the film's large cast of characters, this type of choice should be expected.

Ryan Coogler had to craft the technologically advanced country of Wakanda for Black Panther, which is a major task. The film had a ton of exposition to get through, including how the country managed to stay off the grid with its supply of Vibranium. As such, Okoye and W'Kabi ended up getting the short end of the stick regarding their plot line.

Truly, the relationship between Okoye and W'Kabi was a lost plot in _Black Panther'_s second and third act. The two characters were at the opposite sides of the conflict for Wakanda's rule, which could have made for a fascinating dynamic. But we never got to see them come to blows, albeit for a very quick exchange as the battle was winding down. While both characters got to shine in regards to their relationship to T'Challa and Killmonger, cinephiles could tell something got lost in the shuffle.

During his conversation with The Wrap, Michael Shawver expanded what made the deleted scene from Black Panther so powerful. It turns out it was the scene's layers, as well as the performances by Walking Dead favorite Danai Gurira and _Get Out'_s Daniel Kaluuya.

Those are two powerhouse actors and it was an incredible scene with so many layers to it --- boyfriend and girlfriend, it was general and her advisor, all those things. That was painful.

This really does sound like an awesome scene, so hopefully it'll be available when Black Panther is released for home and digital purchase. Alas, we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes down.

Michael Bay Isn't Making ThunderCats, But Someone Needs To

Last week, a particularly wild rumor surfaced that Six Underground, Netflix's big budget action movie directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds, was in fact, secretly a ThunderCats movie. This news came out of left field, but it was exciting for fans of one of the 1980s' most popular cartoon series. Sadly (or thankfully, depending on your opinion on Michael Bay taking on this material), it was not to be. Ryan Reynolds and writer Rhett Reese have shot down the rumor, confirming that Six Underground is not secretly a big-budget ThunderCats feature film. So we aren't getting a Netflix ThunderCats movie from the man behind the Transformers franchise and starring Deadpool himself. That's fine, and Six Underground sounds interesting in its own right. Yet, although this crazy rumor turned out to be false, it raised an interesting question: Why isn't someone making a ThunderCats movie?

This is one of those popular '80s properties that for some reason remains untapped for cinematic adaptation. It's honestly quite baffling, and if Michael Bay isn't making a ThunderCats movie, someone needs to. The reasons why ThunderCats deserves a live-action movie and how one could work are myriad, but here are just a few of them.

The StoryThe broad strokes of the ThunderCats story tell an epic tale that is both familiar and fresh. Much like Krypton, Thundera is a dying world the ThunderCats must flee. They are pursued by evil mutants who destroy all that's left of their species but this small group. The ThunderCats take refuge on Third Earth, where they are strangers in a strange land. There they find themselves faced with an even greater, more ancient evil in Mumm-Ra. In order to survive and free Third Earth from Mumm-Ra, Lion-O, the childlike leader of the ThunderCats, must learn responsibility and how to be a leader. These kind of story elements are familiar to audiences and have been proven to work in other properties, so they can work here. And those are just the broad strokes. With so many episodes to mine, there is enough material for a whole franchise, cherry-picking the best elements and creating entirely new stories. Cat people that are the last of their kind, with a child leader facing off with a magical mummy many years into the future of the Earth, that's a story that deserves the big screen treatment.

The ThunderCats Are A Fun Superhero TeamPart of why ThunderCats has endured so long is because of the characters. The ThunderCats are a fun group of goofy characters, each with their own personalities and skillsets. Much like the Avengers or any other beloved team, each ThunderCat brings something to the table. Panthro's strength, Tyrgra's brains, Cheetara's speed and Wilykat's tricks all contribute to a fun dynamic both in battle and out. Lion-O, the leader of the ThunderCats, is headstrong and immature, partially thanks to his Shazam-like nature. His mind is that of a child, but his body that of an adult thanks to a suspended animation snafu. Guardians of the Galaxy has proved that audiences will buy in to a concept if they like the characters. Despite their goofy natures and weird looks, the ThunderCats would work in a movie because they are each unique, entertaining characters that work together as a team. Except Snarf, ditch him.

We Don't Get Enough Sci-Fi Fantasy MoviesGenerally speaking, we get science fiction movies like Alien and Ready Player One, or we get fantasy movies like King Arthur: Legend of the Sword or The Hobbit. Rarely do those two genres truly meld in a single film. The obvious exception is Star Wars, which has perfected the space fantasy with the advanced technology of science fiction in things like starships and the magical elements of fantasy like the Force. John Carter bombed spectacularly, but that doesn't mean that space fantasies other than Star Wars can't work. Similar to Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats features both magic and technology. Despite being in the same genre, ThunderCats also has a very different story than Star Wars, so a ThunderCats movie would give audiences something that feels fresh and new in a sub-genre that has often been underutilized.

Technology Can Do It JusticeThe obvious challenge with bringing anything as fantastical as ThunderCats to life is making sure that the technology can do justice in live-action to what the cartoons do in animated form. After all, this is a sci-fi fantasy about cat aliens; making that work on the big screen hinges on them looking good. Fortunately, CGI has reached a place where almost anything can be made to look convincing if enough money is thrown at it. Movies like The Jungle Book, Avatar and the modern Planet of the Apes franchise have made it clear that the Thunderians could look awesome. But they wouldn't even necessarily have to be done with performance capture. Promo images from the Hellboy reboot show that practical makeup could still work great for the ThunderCats themselves, with CGI being used for characters like Snarf and maybe Mumm-Ra. If done right, ThunderCats could be a true visual spectacle.

Nostalgia and Brand RecognitionIt is no secret that nostalgia is in right now. Studios with franchise goals in mind are looking to capitalize on that by adapting and updating properties with a nostalgic sentiment and a recognizable name. Film series like Transformers, G.I. Joe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have done this to varying success, and that should make ThunderCats an easy call to get a blockbuster movie. It seems like a huge oversight that it hasn't happened yet with money being left on the table. This isn't some short-lived, obscure series with little name recognition. The original ThunderCats series ran for multiple seasons with over 100 episodes. It also had a short remake series in 2011 and a new reboot series is coming to Cartoon Network next year. ThunderCats are part of the culture, and even if you haven't seen it, you've heard of it. Name recognition, a built-in fanbase and the nostalgia factor, ThunderCats has all of that. The iron is warming up and now is the time to strike and give this nostalgic property the big screen treatment it deserves.
