Leonardo DiCaprio Circling Role In New Guillermo Del Toro Movie

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those actors who will get the chance to work with just about all of the greatest filmmakers of our time. The Oscar-winner has collaborated with Christopher Nolan, Alejandro Irritu, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, the list goes on. And the list might be getting longer, because the actor is reportedly in talks to star in Guillermo del Toros next project, titled Nightmare Alley.

The filmmaker, best known for stylized films such as Pans Labyrinth and Crimson Peak, has been taking a year off from directing, but he's set to make a strong return with a coming adaptation of thriller Nightmare Alley, based on the 40s noir by William Lindsay Gresham. Leonardo DiCaprio would star as conman Stanton Stan Carlisle, who pairs up with a female psychologist to swindle people into giving them their riches.

Guillermo del Toro has penned the script with Kim Morgan, and he will produce the film with frequent collaborator J. Miles Dale for Fox Searchlight, according to Deadline. The novel was previously adapted into a movie in 1947 starring Tyrone Power, but the upcoming Nightmare Alley is said to be drawing more from the source material than serving as a remake to the previous film.

Nightmare Alley is scheduled to begin shooting in the fall, amongst del Toros other high-profile project, a new Pinocchio movie for Netflix. The streaming service is backing the project for the writer/director, which will be a new take on the fairytale that is set behind fascist Italy. Disney was previously to add the tale to its live-action slate starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, but it has since reportedly been cancelled, maybe due to competition with del Toros vision.

Guillermo del Toro was recently recognized with a Best Picture win for his 2017 girl meets fish romance The Shape of Water. He has since been producing his upcoming horror film Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and Antlers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is infamously choosy about what roles he signs on for. His last role was all the way back in 2015 for The Revenant. The actor will soon return to the big screen for Quentin Tarantinos highly-anticipated next film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a 60s television actor named Rick Dalton. He will also team back up with Martin Scorsese for an adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon and potentially for a Theodore Roosevelt biopic.

If the actor joins Nightmare Alley, it will certainly be the highest-profile collaboration Guillermo del Toro has opted for, since the director has usually hired lesser-known actors in his prior films. Its an exciting project to look forward to, especially the idea of DiCaprio and del Toro taking on the noir genre together.

The Key To Creating An Accessible Villain, According To Robin Hoods Ben Mendelsohn

Villains are a crucial part to any narrative, be they larger than life bullies or simple foils to the hero that we're supposed to identify with. Robin Hood's Ben Mendelsohn has made a good portion of his career about crafting memorable villains, and he has one particular key to making his baddies accessible. If you want to create a baddie that the audience can buy, in Mendelsohn's eyes, the process is quite simply the following:

You can feel how accessible a villain is by how much you feel like they are just sort of walking through the space without any hindrance. The way you make something alive is by sort of paying attention to the sense of maneuvering that goes on. Generally for bad guys, the dilemma is a good guy. 'We've got these plans, we're gonna mess them up.' It's like the old Scooby Doo thing, 'I would have gotten away with if it wasn't for you meddling kids.' How you react to the presence of this fly in the ointment, this thing that needs to be dealt with, I think determines how accessible [you are,] or how much they get to feel you.

If you're not able to at the very least see where your story's villain is coming from, then you probably need to write yourself a new villain. No one understands this better than Ben Mendelsohn, as he's had his fair share of nasty antagonists to play. As a matter of fact, his experiences from 2018 especially have shown him as fully equipped for the job.

Already in this year alone, Ben Mendelsohn has tackled two big ticket literary villains, between Robin Hood's classic Sheriff of Nottingham, and the more contemporary Nolan Sorrento from Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. While both are pretty slimy in their own right, you can at the very least understand their motives, and why they're doing what they're setting out to do. Mendelsohn understands this to a tee, and it's what helps make him so memorable in these evil roles.

This approach helps even more when an acclaimed actor like Ben Mendelsohn is asked to portray a villain that looms as largely as Robin Hood's Sheriff. While his performance definitely has its own rich moments of delicious bad guy dialogue, it never becomes a parody of itself. You're always able to see where the Sheriff is coming from, even though you're square in the court of Robin and his forming band of merry people.

Even more importantly, the approach of accessibility helps keep Ben Mendelsohn's performance separated from most other silver screen portrayals of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Most other versions of the role have wanted to focus merely on the larger than life part of the character, but not the more grounded and human side.

With Robin Hood allowing Ben Mendelsohn to do just that, it distances itself from its historical competition, and gives itself more room to breathe. His Sheriff is born of trauma, and a life of hardened discipline that's formed him into an opportunistic politician. So not only is Mendelsohn's version of the character in line with the traditional portrayals, but there's some timeliness to his evil that's undeniably applicable.

In any other hands, Robin Hood's Sheriff of Nottingham could have became a classically laughable villain you'd boo and jeer in an instant. But with Ben Mendelsohn steering the role, we got a lot more depth than we expected to be mixed in with the traditionally outlandish role.

However, Dark Phoenix was then delayed again to this weekend past, and what made this change really weird is that the new date was announced two days after the film's big trailer debut which had the Valentines Day release date all over it. It's not hard to see how people could think this production had turned into a mess.

The Rom-Com Icon Rebel Wilson Tried to Get To Cameo In Isnt It Romantic

Isnt it Romantic is one of the big releases in theaters this Valentines Day. The new movie is playing fairly well with critics and audiences alike, but it could have also had a rom-com icon near the end of the movie had it played its cards right. Per star Rebel Wilson, the production reached out to actress Julia Roberts about popping in for a quick cameo. She told CinemaBlend in a recent interview:

At one point we were talking about having Julia Roberts just pop in at the very end of the film. She was busy. But I dunno, it would have been awesome.

Julia Roberts is still acting these days, but shes not using her million dollar smile quite as much, instead opting for more serious roles. Lately shes played the mother of a young man with a facial deformity in Wonder and the mother of a drug addict in Ben Is Back.

Shes also the lead in the first season of Amazon Primes Homecoming, a psychological thriller about a support center helping soldiers to return to civilian life.

In short, shes far past the years when she flirted with Hugh Grant, Richard Gere, and plenty of other handsome leading Hollywood men on the big screen. Obviously in the past, Julia Roberts took roles outside of rom-coms, but there was a specific point in her career when people identified her specifically with romantic comedies. Now, that's not longer the case.

Although Isnt It Romantic is the sort of romantic comedy that is self-aware and cheeky about the genre, its easy to see why Julia Roberts would have passed on the gig. (Just as its easy to see why the movie would have reached out anyway.)

Previously, Julia Roberts even revealed that she had pretty much reached the end of the line in the rom-com genre, noting that there was a time and place in her career for those sorts of movies, but that time is not now. She said,

There came a point in my career where people thought I had turned on romantic comedies, which I love them, I love to be in them, I love to watch them. But sometimes, they just don't work at a certain point of life experience.

The last rom-com she was attached to was Mother's Day in 2016 and even that movie featured Julia Roberts as a mother and not a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. With all of this in mind, the likelihood of getting her to cameo in Isn't It Romantic, while not hopeless, was also not high. Still, it would have been pretty cool.
