Theaters In The U.S. Are Breaking A Box Office Record In 2018

Thanos snapped half the world away in 2018, but the box office not only survived, it thrived to set an all-time record.

The domestic box office just hit $11 billion earlier in the week, with three weekends still to go in 2018. That puts it on track to potentially reach $12 billion, which would certainly be a record. The record at this point is actually $11.4 billion, which was hit in 2016.

At this point, 2018 revenue is already 6 percent of that record-setting year, THR reports, and a full 10 percent head of the $11.1 billion from 2017. The North American box office hit $11 billion faster than ever this year. It took until December 30 last year, and Dec. 26 in 2016, and Dec. 29 in 2015.

Box office prognosticators are estimating that the final days of the year could bring in something close to the $832 million that 2014 saw from December 12-31. That was the last year, before 2018, that there was no Star Wars film in the December marketplace. If this year matches those stats, the revenue for 2018 could hit $11.8 billion and even maybe maybe maybe reach $12 billion.

So who needs December Star Wars movies, eh? (Don't answer that, Solo.)

Clearly we still need Marvel and Disney, since the top films at the North American box office in 2018 (so far) were Black Panther ($700M domestic), worldwide leader Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, and Deadpool 2.

Potential domestic box office big-hitters still to come this year are Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse just did its part for the box office with a $35.4 million opening.

Early prediction: 2019 is going to leave 2018 in the dust, record-breaker or not. This coming year has Avengers: Endgame, which is somehow even more anticipated than Infinity War; plus Captain Marvel; Spider-Man: Far From Home; Aladdin; The Lion King; Dumbo; Toy Story 4; Frozen 2; Shazam!; It: Chapter Two; Godzilla: King of the Monsters; John Wick 3; How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World; plus, Star Wars: Episode IX.

BOOM.

There's more, too. As much as consumers are constantly hit on all sides with new ways to view entertainment, we still keep heading out to the movies (and theaters keep raising the prices, 'cause they know we'll keep paying).

Here's the list of what we know is headed to theaters in 2019 at this point. Do you have an early prediction for the top movie of 2019? Just kidding. It's Endgame. Unless it's Toy Story 4. Or [Name Your Choice]. Will it be Star Wars: Episode IX, or will the frustrations with The Last Jedi keep fans from heading out to the theater this time next year?

Zachary Levi Is Literally Glowing In New Shazam! Image

Zachary Levi Is Literally Glowing In New Shazam! Image

The DCEU is going to delve into some lighthearted territory next year when David F. Sandberg's Shazam! hits the big screen, and many audiences are very excited to see what the silver screen version of Billy Batson can bring to the table. It has been decades since the character last appeared in live-action, but a newly-released photo from the production seems to promise something very powerful and faithful to the source material. Check out the photo released of Shazam actor Zachary Levi literally glowing as the titular hero, below!

This is not your father's DC Comics superhero movie. Gone is the dark atmosphere, and in its place is something that's all smiles and childhood wonder -- with a literal glow of power on his chest to hammer that idea home. In the photo, we see a fully transformed Shazam (Zachary Levi) hanging out with Freddy Freeman (IT actor Jack Dylan Grazer) as they explore the possibilities of the powers that Billy Batson (Asher Angel) recently acquired from a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou).

This is one of our best glimpses at the full Shazam costume, and the fact that the symbol on the chest lights up already singles it out as something very distinct from heroes like Ben Affleck's Batman or Henry Cavill's Superman. Moreover, many fans have been clamoring to see a finalized version of the Shazam suit following some arguably unimpressive behind-the-scenes photos leaked during the film's production. Now that we have a proper look, it is far easier to see what the director actually wants the outfit to look like in the final cut of the movie.

Of course, for fans of the DC Comics source material, there's one other element of this photo that seems to jump out: how similar it is to the New 52 origins of Shazam. For the sake of comparison, check out a panel from Shazam's New 52 run, below!

From the snow, to the way Billy and Freddy Freeman play around with Billy's newfound superpowers, it's clear that David F. Sandberg and the folks at DC have pulled quite a bit of material from that particular source. That said, with no official trailer yet, we will have to wait and see what else the film will adapt from the comics.

David F. Sandberg's Shazam! will hit theaters next year on April 5, 2019! Until then, we still have plenty more DC content on the way, so make sure to keep an eye out for all of the updates that will come from San Diego Comic-Con this weekend and mark down your calendars for the December 21, 2018 release of James Wan's Aquaman later this year!

Share this: 3 hours ago Shazam!, DC's next superhero film, arrives in April and we haven't seen too much footage for it so far. The first teaser trailer debuted seven months ago, and though we've gotten snippets of new footage here and there, we haven't gotten a full-on new trailer.

Universal Studios Is Building New Thrill Ride, But It Means Change To Harry Potter Celebration

Universal Studios Is Building New Thrill Ride, But It Means Change To Harry Potter Celebration

While Universal Studios is gearing up for this year's Hollywood Horror Nights, the Orlando-based theme park is also looking to the future, and we recently learned there are some big changes on the horizon in regard to the Harry Potter sections. Some of this is good news and some of this is not the best news for fans, but as we're feeling pretty optimistic this Monday, we'll stick with the good news first: Universal Studios Orlando is definitely working hard to open that new thrill ride one of the Harry Potter sections of its parks. As for the other news? It's going to have an effect on a Harry Potter event that parkgoers have loved for a few years now.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been open in Orlando since 2010 (the one in California didn't open until 2016). In that time, there have been plenty of expansions and additions added since the themed concept initially opened. In fact, in Florida, you can catch some wizarding wonders in both Islands of Adventure and the regular Universal Studios Florida parks. Details are scarce in regards to what the new "thrill" ride will entail; however, we do know the new expansion is going to go in the Islands of Adventure Park and that it is expected to be a coaster experience. In addition, the AP says the thrill ride won't be the only new Harry Potter addition to the park and that there will be information about new experiences coming soon.

Unfortunately with good news there is often bad news, as well. Fans who enjoy The Wizarding World of Harry Potter's annual celebration of Harry Potter will not be getting their fix in 2019. The popular theme park has announced that as part of the renovations and changes A Celebration of Harry Potter will not be happening next year at any point. The event usually happens near the start of an individual year, during the winter months. The 2018 event occurred between January 26 and January 28 of last year. For the past five years, the fun fan event has lasted for three days and been covered by the price of admission. Stars of the movies are often involved and it's kind of a big deal. So losing that will be noticeable on the calendar next year. Hopefully, it will just be a blip before Universal gets back to its regular programming.

Obviously, adding a ride to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not the only change afoot at either of the Universal Studios parks. The Hollywood theme park recently shut down the famous Jurassic Park ride in order to go through a Jurassic World remodel. A Terminator 2-based ride was also shut down and is expected to be replaced in 2019. As soon as Universal makes a clearer announcement regarding what to expect with all of Harry Potter changes coming in 2019 we'll be on hand to keep you posted. In the meantime, you can take a look at the final day for the Jurassic Park ride. Or, if you are more of a Potter-head, you can see what is coming for the franchise on the movie front with our guide to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Like all of the other films in the franchise, secrecy is at maximum levels surrounding the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX (hell, even the title is being kept hush-hush). We know absolutely nothing officially about the plot, and basically all of the information that's been released simply involves the people actually making the film. J.J. Abrams is back at the helm, with a script that he

Looks Like The Spawn Reboot May Have Found Its Lead

By  at April 01, 2020  , , ,  No comments
Looks Like The Spawn Reboot May Have Found Its Lead

In 1997, only five years after he debuted in Image Comics, Spawn starred in his own movie, but unlike his comic book adventures, the demonic character's theatrical tale was met with critical derision. Fortunately, Spawn will be getting a shot at cinematic redemption, as last year, following nearly a decade of development, creator Todd McFarlane announced that an R-rated reboot that he will direct is in the works at Blumhouse Productions. In the months since, we've slowly learned how this new Spawn movie will be different from its predecessor, but today brings work that the reboot may have finally found its lead, and it's someone who already has a little comic book movie experience under his belt: Jamie Foxx.

This isn't the first time that Jamie Foxx's name has been connected to a new Spawn movie. Back in 2013, the actor expressed interest in playing Al Simmons, and five years later, That Hashtag Show is reporting that Foxx has been offered the role, which was previously played by Michael Jai White. However, Foxx hasn't signed on to the Spawn reboot yet, and his involvement may hinder on how quickly the project moves forward. Supposedly production is set to begin this August, with Todd McFarlane hoping for Spawn to come out sometime in 2019. So perhaps if Spawn can get off the ground sooner rather than later, Foxx will be willing to participate.

If Jamie Foxx does play Spawn, this will be his second time performing in a comic book movie, as he previously played Max Dillon, a.k.a. Electro, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His other recent credits include the Horrible Bosses movies, Django Unchained, White House Down and Baby Driver. Later this year he'll be seen as Little John in Robin Hood, and he's also hosting Beat Shazam over at Fox. Foxx is a talented performer, but the fact that he was so enthusiastic about playing Spawn half a decade ago suggests that if he accepts the role for this reboot, we're in for a treat.

Rather than follow the same path as the 1997 movie and place Al Simmons front and center, the Spawn reboot is taking a different approach with featuring the eponymous character that doesn't involve exploring his origin story. Longtime fans of the Spawn mythology are familiar with detectives Sam Burke and Maximillian "Twitch" Williams, who started out as supporting characters in Spawn's comic book and became so popular that they were given their own book. While we won't see these two together in the upcoming movie, Todd McFarlane revealed that Twitch will be the other main character, as he and his yet-to-be-revealed female partner will cross paths with the demonic protagonist. As for Spawn, although he won't speak like a normal human, he will communicate in a special way.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the Spawn reboot as they come in. For now, if you're interested in planning your trips to the theater later this year, you can find release date information in our 2018 premiere guide.

Looks Like The Spawn Reboot May Have Found Its Lead

Blumhouse is going all out with their first foray into the comic book world by ensuring that their new movie has a big star in place. And according to a new report from Deadline, it looks like they have found it as Jamie Foxx has been confirmed for the lead role in the adaptation of Todd MacFarlane's Spawn.
