8 Awesome Movies You Need To Watch Before They Leave Netflix In August 2018

Clearing your Netflix queue is like weeding a garden: just as you think you've caught up with the game, at least two more titles pop up in need of attention. Such is the cycle of life with a streaming services such as this, and with each new month comes new weeds for your eyes to behold before they are no more. August is going to be purging some beloved movies, as well some recent and distant hits you may not have had time to check out. If you're curious as to what's in the process of walking out the door throughout this past month, check out our previous listing of departing titles. Otherwise, break out your notepads, and prepare to say goodbye to the following.

Adventures in BabysittingWith a Disney Channel remake fresh in everyone's minds, it's a shame that the original Adventures In Babysitting is making its way off of Netflix's streaming service. A classic "adventure in a night" film from the 80's, sitter Elizabeth Shue will help the kids she's watching through an evening of danger, adventure, and a pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe meeting with Thor. Trust us, it all makes sense when you watch it; and you'll see why Disney should have never messed with the babysitter in the form of a TV remake.

Finding DoryHave you had a good cry lately? If you're in need of such a thing, Finding Dory will help you by providing some tear-purging goodness, as Ellen DeGeneres's titular character makes her way through the ocean, in hopes of finding her parents. Sure, there's tons of laughs, and even some memes that folks took from director Andrew Stanton's return to the world of some well spoken marine life, but let's not lie here: you're going to cry, as well as laugh if you watch this one. And it's worth every second of the experience... unless you're using the film as a reference material for marine biology.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox StoryWhile it may be the 10th anniversary of Step Brothers, it's as easy to focus on that monumental comedy's achievements as it is to overlook some of the quality films that came after it. Enter Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, a parody of music biopics such as Ray and Walk The Line, which is centered around half of the Doback brothers, John C. Reilly. Much like the more storied film of the two, Walk Hard is a mix of musical mayhem, sight gags, and recurring jokes that all mix into one insane soft serve of a film.

St. VincentSome day, Bill Murray might win an Oscar, especially if he keeps returning to films like St. Vincent. Befriending a young boy who lives next door to him, Murray's Vincent teaches his young friend some important life lessons, while also learning something about life through said young friend. Boasting a cast with the likes of Naomi Watts, Melissa McCarthy, and IT's Jaeden Lieberher, you could walk in the doors of St. Vincent as a Murray fan, and find yourself in good hands all around.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the WorldThe apocalypse can get pretty lonely, especially if you're Steve Carell's character in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. With the world getting ready for a massive meteor impact, and Carell's wife leaving him in the first five minutes of the film, we're shown a journey through a world that's all about shedding conventional limits as the clock winds down. And yet, all Carell and co-star Keira Knightley want is some sort of familiar normalcy before the big boom, with their quest for such a thing being heartwarming while also hilarious.

The 40-Year-Old VirginIt's time for a Steve Carell double feature, folks! After you've seen the bittersweet vibes of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, feel free to brighten things back up with Carell's similarly sweet The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Thankfully, the problems of protagonist Andy aren't the end of the world, though trying to lose one's virginity at 40 may seem that way. Thankfully, no meteor is around to ruin the fun, but there is a lot of awkward passing of knowledge. So, maybe that meteor could be handy after all.

Sausage PartyOk, so you're in the mood to go off the deep end with some comedy that doesn't know any boundaries. The 40-Year-Old Virgin was just too tame, and you need something so edgy it'll shake your brainpan. Well, allow me to slap the roof on the beauty known as Sausage Party, as I sell you an animated experience you'll never forget. To ruin any of the fun for the newcomers would be a crime, but you folks that have taken this ride before know why I'm suggesting this one. If you're new, go on through. If you've been there, then you're aware.

The RoadAre you looking for less comedy and more apocalypse after watching Seeking a Friend for the End of the World? First of all, I hope everything is alright. But second, and most importantly, we have you covered if you're looking for more introspective, less silly fare. The Road is a post-apocalyptic drama about a father and son just trying to survive after the world has been leveled by an apocalypse. With Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the father and son wandering through the ruins of America, it's a film that's truly moving, if not absolutely heartbreaking to experience.

How Much Movie Content Has Shrunk On Netflix

How Much Movie Content Has Shrunk On Netflix

It used to be that Netflix was the place to go for a wide selection of movies available streaming. However, over time, it began feeling like the world of films on Netflix's platform was getting smaller. And sure enough, a recent analysis has proven that over the course of eight years, the movie library has indeed shrunk by a sizable margin. To be specific, the available movie content on Netflix has shrunk by 21% between 2010 and 2018.

Running through the numbers at large, movies used to take up 93% of Netflix's streaming library as far back as 2010, as 6,755 movies were available to stream at that time. Fashing forward to today, that figure has wound down to a current total of 4,010 films, which means about 72% of the big red envelope's digital queue is taken up by movies. While that's still a pretty major majority of their content, that's still a sizable drop in regards to where the movie library once was, according to BGR.

The current state of Netflix's business model has indeed seen a ramp up in television production, and one can't blame the company for doing so. Netflix's biggest opening into the awards circuit has been through its TV branch, not to mention the investment in television would seem to be an easier one to recoup, thanks to the advent and subsequent popularity of binge-watching whole seasons in one sitting. Regardless, that's not to say that the attention is completely drawn in the TV direction, as Netflix has started developing its own library of original movies, as well.

Let's not forget, 2018 is the year of Netflix's pledge to have as many as 80 original movies debut on the platform. That's a mix of originals like Mute and Game Over, Man that Netflix has directly produced, as well as acquisitions from studios like Paramount -- which delivered The Cloverfield Paradox to Netflix directly, and made a deal to debut Annihilation on its serves internationally. Not to mention, the third key to Netflix's stable, movies library (although there are fewer titles now than there were previously) is the constant addition of recent theatrical releases in a reasonable window -- an example would be what Netflix has been doing with Disney content, although that deal will be ending after this year.

As noted, that last portion of the model won't last forever, as the dip in titles reported will only grow when agreements like the one between Netflix and Disney end. That deal in particular will sting, as Disney is looking to become the next big streaming giant with its own platform. Combining both the studio's own original content debuting exclusively on the streaming service, as well as any other legacy content that's unveiled exclusively available through the new Disney portal, there will be one more competitor out to race against in the name of content.

While Netflix's film library may seem to be shrinking, the streaming services ambitions of delivering more frequent and better quality original films is undimmed. From a numbers standpoint, it may seem like a huge loss; but if there's more big ticket originals landing on Netflix and fewer films like Avengers Grimm being introduced into the pot, that subscription should seem like money better spent as each month goes by. It'll be interesting to see how things progress for the streaming giant, and you can bet we'll have a keen eye on what's to come here at CinemaBlend.

In the meantime, titles like Mute and The Cloverfield Paradox are just some of the Netflix Originals available for your viewing pleasure in 2018. Feel free to check out the list of titles coming to their line-up in March, as well as our list of titles we're looking forward to through this year, and beyond.

Why Overboard's Plot Makes More Sense Than The Original, According To The Cast

Why Overboard's Plot Makes More Sense Than The Original, According To The Cast

Over thirty years after Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn made romantic-comedy history with their work on Overboard, the story is about to get a significant overhaul with Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez in the lead roles of the upcoming remake. The gender-swapped take on the comedy classic is set to hit theaters next month, and according to the folks behind the new film, the changes made to the material actually make it a more logical story than the one that preceded it because we watch a rich jerk become a loving family man. Overboard star Eva Longoria explained in a recent interview:

The role reversal actually makes more sense now. If you think back to the original, you're like, 'Wait, a guy kidnaps a woman [and] makes her work?' This is a little more accepting, because it's the guy. Of course he's going to do hard labor in the house. He should!

In the original Overboard, Kurt Russell's blue-collar Dean finds Goldie Hawn's amnesiac Joanna and puts her to work as his "wife." The new version of Overboard switches things up by making Eugenio Derbez's Leonardo the one who has lived a life of luxury and sees Anna Faris' Kate play the trickster by making him work like he has never worked before. Though the fundamental tentpoles of the story appear intact, Eva Longoria seems to think that this version of the story makes far more sense in a modern context by tracking the arc of a rich and pompous man as he learns the value of work and love.

Building off of that sentiment about Overboard's newfound logic, Anna Faris chimed in and explained how she hopes that the remake will still satisfy fans of the original while also offering up a good story with plenty of heart. Faris continued in the interview with ET and said:

This man who has everything somehow finds reward in having a family and what money can't buy. God, that was good. I didn't even practice that!...I hope it satisfies fans of the original, and I hope that it makes people happy.

Overboard isn't the only reboot/remake to switch things up by swapping the genders of the principal characters. This film comes on the heels of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters, and will seemingly continue with the upcoming gender-swapped remake of Ron Howard's Splash, which will feature Channing Tatum as the merman and Workaholics star Jillian Bell as the human who falls in love with the merman. With Overboard next on deck (pun wholly intended), we will just have to wait and see how audiences respond to this new take on the classic narrative.

The gender-swapped Overboard remake will debut on the big screen on May 4. Make sure to check it out when it hits theaters and keep an eye on CinemaBlend's full movie premiere guide so you can stay in-the-loop on all of the biggest and best movies coming this year!
