The Rise Of Skywalkers Editor Had To Convince J.J. Abrams To Let Her Cut The Movie On Set

The Star Wars franchise is arguably the biggest in the world, spanning decades and generations of fans. As such, the pressure for director J.J. Abrams to deliver with The Rise of Skywalker is extremely high. Not only must Abrams complete the trilogy he began with The Force Awakens, but the entire Skywalker Saga. And as such, things might need to be filmed a little differently.

Maryann Brandon is the editor on The Rise of Skywalker, one of the most important jobs on the entire crew. But rather than waiting until principal photography had wrapped, Brandon actually started cutting the film on the set, and was present during filming. But she had to convince J.J. Abrams to let her work this way. As she recently revealed:

I did this thing on cutting Rise of Skywalker - and we have a very short schedule. When we did The Force Awakens we started in May and we finished shooting in October, and we were out [the following] Christmas. For this film, we didnt start until August, so we werent done until February shooting - so we have four months less time, and its a very big film. So I convinced J.J. to let me cut on the set. He was like, No, we never do that.' I was like, Just try it, so I can start turning over shots.

Seems like the gestation period for The Force Awakens was noticeably longer than The Rise of Skywalker. So in order to produce the best product and not rush the editing process, Maryann Brandon needed to work as Episode IX was being shot.

That's exactly what J.J. Abrams eventually conceded to. And while it may be unique, that method of working should presumably result in Abrams' vision being even more strongly represented in the upcoming sequel's theatrical cut. Later in her appearance at at the Carsey-Wolf Center in Santa Barbara (via Comic Book), Maryann Brandon revealed how Abrams did an about-face, and insisted she be near him during filming. As she put it:

So I was on the set the entire time, and he got so used to it that he was like, You need to be less than ten feet away from me at all times - so if the camera would move 10 feet, I would move 10 feet. I was everywhere! Outside, in a water tank.

Well, this is certainly exciting. The editor has a crucial job in the filmmaking process, and Maryann Brandon being on set during filming and cutting up The Rise of Skywalker as it was being shot ensures that she deeply connects to the creative vision for the blockbuster. As such, she'll presumably craft even more impressive work than her already lengthy resume It's just too bad that we'll have to wait until December to see it.

The contents of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are a complete mystery, save for the very brief trailer we've been given thus far. It looks like the upcoming blockbuster will take the new heroes to exciting adventures together, as well as wrap up the story for franchise favorites like General Leia and Lando Calrissian. The narrative possibilities are endless, especially with The Emperor's laugh accompanying the final moments of that first teaser.

Pixar's Brad Bird Has Some Blunt Thoughts About Why Animated Movies Aren't Kids Movies

The superhero genre produces movies that come in all shapes and sizes. These films can take on a broad range of ratings from the MPAA, with most of them getting the PG-13 label when they debut in theaters. With that said, Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 is only rated PG, and while the lower rating implies to some that it's tailored to younger audiences, Bird wants all of us to know that it is definitely not a kids movie, and that animated films, in general, are not inherently kids movies. Responding to a fan who complained about the foul language in the film on social media, Bird opened up about this topic and explained:

For some, an animated film with a PG rating inherently implies that it's aimed at kids. However, that's not how Brad Bird feels about the situation. Incredibles 2 features slightly stronger language than one might expect from an animated PG movie, and while that didn't sit well with one specific fan, Bird's tweet emphasizes the fact that Incredibles 2 casts a wide audience net and shouldn't be considered merely a kids movie that only plays to the younger members of the audience. By his own estimation, thinking that a film is a kids movie just because it is animated and PG is a false way to look at the medium.

The swearing is not the only element of Incredibles 2 that pushes the PG label. Unlike many other films produced under the Disney or Pixar banners, the violence is reasonably visceral (at least by PG standards) and doesn't shy away from ideas like death or murder in the way that it treats its story. Moreover, there are sequences in the movie in which characters openly drink alcohol while engaging in conversation with one another, which (at least by this writer's recollection) has seldom happened in previous Pixar movies.

Of course, those of us who are familiar with Brad Bird's work in the animated landscape shouldn't necessarily be surprised by this. Much like Incredibles 2, films like The Incredibles and The Iron Giant similarly dealt in mature themes that appealed to adults and children alike. These movies sometimes get classified in the kids movie category, but to look at them and assume that they're solely for children arguably feels like a miscalculation.

No matter what you think of the foul language used in Incredibles 2, it's hard to argue against the fact that the film has handily gone on to become a box office juggernaut since its debut. How The Shazam Trailer Teases Black Adam In This Universe

For a long time, the Shazam! movie was going to depict a showdown between the eponymous World's Mightiest Mortal and Black Adam, one of the superhero's greatest adversaries. However, plans changed when it was announced that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who has been attached to play Black Adam since September 2014, will instead first appear as the Kahndaqian anti-hero in his own movie first. There will come a day when Shazam and Black Adam will clash on the big screen, but for his first theatrical outing, Shazam will instead face Doctor Thaddeus Sivana. That said, the Shazam! trailer released this past weekend did tease Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe by alluding to the Council of Eternity, the group that Black Adam destroyed in the New 52 continuity.

In the middle of the Shazam trailer, Billy Batson successfully gets onto a subway car before the bullies chasing after him can board it, but just like in the comics, there's more to this subway car than meets the eye. In an instant, the other passengers disappear and Billy is transported to the Rock of Eternity, where the mysterious Wizard awaits to make the youth his new champion. This is how Shazam/Captain Marvel's origin story has always unfolded, but as you'll see below, the Wizard in Shazam! is surrounded by six empty chairs. If the comic book lore is being followed, then the other members of the Council of Eternity once sat in those chairs.

In the New 52 continuity, the Council of Eternity represented the seven mythologies of Earth, and it was these wizards' job to protect the world from evil and pass judgement on those they believed were guilty, such as the individuals who became The Phantom Stranger, The Question and Pandora. However, this alliance came tumbling down with the rise of Black Adam. In this version of the main DC universe, The Wizard had originally selected a Kahndaqi boy named Aman to be his champion, and Aman wanted to use his powers to help people and rid the slave masters who ruled Kahndaq of their evil souls. But Aman's uncle, Adam, was so consumed by anger and his need for vengeance that he stole Aman's power (it's strongly implied he killed his nephew) and became Black Adam so he could dish out his own brand of justice. At a later date, Black Adam killed most of the Council of Eternity, leaving the Wizard as the only survivor. Judging by those empty chairs, presumably a similar scenario happened in the DCEU.

Because Black Adam's backstory will no doubt be explored in his upcoming movie, it's unclear if the character will be referenced at all in Shazam! Still, the fact that director David F. Sandberg and the crew put those other chairs in the Rock of Eternity suggests that while there's no guarantee the Council of Eternity will be mentioned either, the organization did exist, and the Wizard is the only one left of the group. Although the DCEU seems to be steering away from "crossovers" following Justice League's underperformance in the theaters, Shazam and Black Adam are intertwined, so their movies are obviously going to be connected.

My guess is that the Council of Eternity will be mentioned in passing during Shazam!, while Black Adam, assuming we learn about the eponymous character's beginnings in Kahndaq thousands of years ago, will feature the full Council of Eternity and possibly show how all but the Wizard died. From there, ideally we'll see Shazam and Black Adam clash in Shazam! 2, but even beyond that, including the Council of Eternity can help broaden the magical side of the DCEU, which has already been touched on in Suicide Squad and will explored deeply in Justice League Dark.

Shazam! will work its magic in theaters on April 5, 2019, and although Black Adam doesn't have a release date set yet, one of the film's producer, Hiram Garcia, recently said that Adam Sztykiel's script is impressive.
