Teen Taking Bird Box Challenge Crashes Car While Blindfolded

This is why we can't have nice things. Netflix's Bird Box has not only inspired many Twitter memes it also appears to have inspired several Darwin Awards nominees.

There is such a thing called the #BirdBoxChallenge, with fans of the Sandra Bullock film challenging themselves to do certain tasks blindfolded, like the characters in the horror movie. People have taken that so literally they are dragging their children around until they slam into walls, walking down city sidewalks blindfolded, and even driving with blindfolds on.

That's apparently what one 17-year-old in Layton, Utah decided to do. She covered her eyes while driving and -- try not to stagger back from shock! -- it didn't go well. Her Bird Box Challenge fail reportedly caused a two-car accident, as showcased by the Layton Police Department:

Sigh. A Layton police officer told CBS News there was another 16-year-old in the car at the time of the crash, which happened while the driver was attempting a Bird Box Challenge move on Layton Parkway. It's a good thing there were no injuries.

You have to imagine their parents weren't thrilled. Teens pull crazy stunts all the time, but they aren't the only ones doing this Bird Box stuff. Face it: If a real _Bird Bo_x situation happens, you are not going to be able to pull it off like Sandra Bullock's Malorie. Only she can raise two children, travel through the woods, and row down rapids in an apocalyptic world where sight is deadly. Malorie is fictional, though, and even Sandra Bullock admitted she walked into cameras on set.

Netflix even reached out with a warning for people not to do the Bird Box Challenge. It's sad that they felt the need to do that. Most of us get ourselves into enough trouble when we can see the stuff in front of us, so you can imagine the nonsense people have been getting into while blindfolded. People who are blind or visually impaired must be so embarrassed for us.

Hopefully this doesn't create a chilling effect where shows feel the need to hold back in case people get The Wrong Idea and do something foolish. You know someone out there is going to hurt themselves or someone else and try to sue Netflix for the idea. Even though Bird Box was based on a book. And in the movie when they wanted to drive, they covered up the car windows as best as they could instead of blindfolding themselves.

Bird Box has been an unexpected social sensation in this way, and also set a viewing record for Netflix that the Nielsen numbers mostly backed up. Director Susanne Bier has already been asked about a potential sequel, picking up from that ending, but she's taking some time to savor the moment.

But now maybe Netflix will be too afraid to give fans a sequel, or it will have to come with a series of warnings. We are the real monsters!

Night School Might Make More Money This Weekend Than We Thought

With October quickly approaching, a slew of highly-anticipated releases such as Venom, A Star is Born, Halloween will undoubtedly bring in a huge crowd of excited moviegoers. However, the last weekend of September has arrived, and it's not a slot typical of moneymakers. But based on late previews last night, comedy Night School starring Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart could make a lot more during its opening weekend than originally expected. After scoring $1.35 million in 2,500 theaters on Thursday night, Night School is anticipated to open at #1 with $32 million in earnings.

While Universal originally projected an opening at around $25 million for Night School, Box Office Mojo projects the numbers will be much higher based on these earnings. Night School cost $29 million to produce, so if it breaks $30 million this weekend as projected, it will break even in its first weekend, putting it in a good position to continue to earn as bigger releases debut in the succeeding weeks. The film is currently pacing ahead of past movies starring the comedians such as Central Intelligence, Girls Trip and Think Like a Man Too, which each opened at around $30 million as well.

Night School stars two of the hottest comedic actors at the moment who have seen explosive box office success in the past year. Kevin Hart has been an appealing on-screen name throughout the decade. He recently saw his highest-grossing entry with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Karen Gillan, which made $404 million domestically. On the other hand, Tiffany Haddish only recently became a household name with her breakout role in last summer's Girls Trip which earned $115 million domestically with a small budget of $19 million. Night School reunites Haddish with Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee in her first leading role since then.

The comedy follows Kevin Hart as a failed salesperson hoping to change his career path by getting his GED and becoming a stockbroker. Enter, Tiffany Haddish, an unorthodox night school teacher who Hart must learn from if he and his class of high school dropouts want to pass the test. Early reviews for Night School have not been kind, as CinemaBlend's Mike Reyes calling it a "comedy that is higher than lazy or paint-by-numbers," along with a current Rotten Tomato meter of 27%. However, for huge fans of Hart and Haddish, seeing the two together in a film looks like it could be enough to draw in a decent opening for the comedy.

Night School opens today alongside other wide releases like the family-friendly Yeti film, Smallfoot and the teen horror film Hell Fest, It is expected to win the weekend with a $32 million release based on projections, but surprises are certainly always possible. The Big Problem With The Black Manta Suit, According To Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Whether you're an avid comic book reader or grew up watching the Super Friends on TV, there's a good chance that if you're a fan of Aquaman, you're also a fan of his most iconic nemesis, Black Manta. You couldn't have a big screen Aquaman movie without bringing the character along for the ride, and while it's clear Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had a blast playing the character, it wasn't all fun and games. It turns out that suit isn't quite as much fun as it looks as it was incredibly heavy. According to the actor...

The biggest problem with the suit is that it's heavy. It's almost 100 pounds. It's real, it's functional, it's an expensive suit.

While most of the big superhero outfits of the day, like the Iron Man suit, are now more CGI than actual costume, it seems that Aquaman decided to make the Black Manta suit the real thing, at least from a physical sense, it probably doesn't shoot lasers. A costume that weighs 100 pounds, as the actor tells The IMDb Show, is no joke, it's got to be difficult to move around in the thing, and visibility with that helmet has to be less than great. It might make sense as a supervillain, but for an actor wearing something like that it must be a chore.

This isn't the first time we've heard about the difficulty that comes with bringing a popular comic book hero to life on screen. It's something of a regular occurrence now as more and more comic characters make the leap. When characters like Black Manta were created, no thought was given to the practicality of the costume, it was simply a question of what design looked the best on the page. Nobody worried about how such a thing would translate to film and a real person.

However, the characters have become such icons that people want to see them on screen just as they look in the comics. This means creating what might otherwise be an utterly impractical costume, like the massive helmet of Black Manta, just the way fans remember it.

It seems to have been worth it. Aquaman has become a massive hit and the highest grossing DC movie to date around the world. That's probably not entirely because Black Manta looks amazing, but that fact probably doesn't hurt either. He does look like his comic self jumped right off the comic page. Fans of the villain, and there are many, have to be satisfied with what they got.

Add to that the fact that odds are we'll see Black Manta again in the future of the DC universe, and it would appear Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be getting quite the workout in his massive costume for the foreseeable future.
