The Solo: A Star Wars Story Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Are Saying

It's only been five months since Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, but we already have a new movie set in a galaxy far, far away to tide us over for the summer theatrical season. Like 2016's Rogue One, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a standalone adventure chronicling Han Solo trying to establish his reputation as a smuggler a decade before the events of A New Hope. Solo dealt with a troubled production, as directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller departed during principal photography due to creative differences, and Ron Howard was brought aboard as their replacement. But the final product is only a few weeks away from hitting theaters, and reviews are now in that seem to shine a more mixed light on the latest Star Wars movie compared to its immediate predecessors.

Starting off, CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg gave Solo: A Star Wars Story three out of five stars, saying in his review that while the movie is better than any of the entries from the prequel trilogy, it still turned out to be a mixed bag that had an uneven narrative and a lack of proper stakes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a ricocheting experience of highs and lows, and the end result doesn't inspire any real extreme reaction -- as hard as that might be to grasp in the world of modern blockbuster filmmaking.

Collider's Matt Goldberg also wasn't enamored with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Giving it a C grade, he declared that most of Solo's new characters don't leave much of an impression, and in the end, the movie just feels like another Star Wars movie rather than something exceptional.

Solo is technically a Star Wars movie, but it's one that has set pieces in place of a personality. It's a film whose base level is 'fine'. Despite some unique cinematography, Ron Howard's direction is staid, stolid, and completely without personality.

But some reviewers were more positive towards Solo: A Star Wars Story. Brian Truitt from USA Today felt that Solo did actually do enough to distinguish itself from other Star Wars movies and is actually more successful than Rogue One, hence why it deserved three out of four stars.

While Solo is a Star Wars movie that gambles on not really being a 'Star Wars movie,' it's a winning chapter that only sparingly (though intriguingly) shows its hand in connecting to the bigger universe.

However, The Wrap's Alonso Duralde wasn't as kind towards Solo: A Star Wars Story, saying that it might be the "least epic" Star Wars movie to date and doesn't tell us anything about these familiar characters that we didn't already learn from the original trilogy.

As an intergalactic adventure, it's mostly adequate, with some very successful elements, but if you stripped the Star Wars names and places, it's doubtful that it would spawn much excitement, let alone sequels.

EW's Chris Nashawaty was right in the middle with Solo: A Star Wars Story, awarding it a solid B and noting that those who are looking for a "slightly fuller and more rounded understanding" of Han Solo, then you'll be pleased.

It's the very definition of 'solid' and 'competent.' Nothing more, nothing less.

Finally, Andrew Barker from Variety stated that Solo: A Star Wars Story boasts impressive visuals and a satisfying performance from Alden Ehrenreich, though the movie doesn't take quite enough risks.

Though burdened with a slow start and enough thirsty fan-service to power Comic-Con's Hall H for a decade, it has a kicky, kinetic heist movie at its heart, and its action sequences are machine-tooled spectacles of the first order.

These are just a sampling of the reviews out there, but overall, it looks like that while Solo: A Star Wars Story isn't a bad movie by any means and has numerous enjoyable moments, it doesn't quite measure up to the other Star Wars movies that have been released so far under Disney. While Solo is predicted to make a killing at the box office, we have yet to learn if Lucasfilm will move forward with more Han-centric movies or if this will remain a one-off tale that gives us a little insight into the character's life long before he joined the Rebellion. The critical actions during in will presumably help the studio decide one way or the other.

New Hellboy Image Shows Off The Main Cast And Plenty Of Monsters

Maybe heaven can wait, but hell certainly can't with the triumphant return of Hellboy coming soon. It's been ten years since Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army starring Ron Perlman was released, and fans have been impatiently awaiting another film. When it was announced that a new Hellboy movie was being made, it promised a reboot instead of a conclusion to the previous franchise. October started fans off strong with a new blazing new poster of Stranger Things' David Harbour transformed into the badass hero. With New York Comic-Con is underway, the cast of the upcoming Hellboy are set to make their debut at a Saturday panel. In honor of this, a new image featuring more of the cast has been released. Take a look:

What a hellishly magnificent new poster! While David Harbour's incredible straight-from-the-comics look is still front and center, this teaser shared on Twitter offers more to unpack for fans. On the left are creepy and gruesome devilish creatures to be unleashed in London. While Guillermo del Toro's films imagined the beasts from the comic as more fanciful, director Neil Marshall will bring more horror elements to the R-rated reboot. In the center, (below Hellboy) is the first look at Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen. The Resident Evil actress will be the main antagonist of Hellboy who threatens the fate of the world. To the right is the rest of the main cast including Lost's Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio, American Honey's Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan and Deadwood's Ian McShane as Professor Trevor Bruttenholm.

The new poster gives us a broader sense of the movie in anticipation for the Comic-Con panel tomorrow, and if predictions are true a trailer could also drop tomorrow. The highly artistic feel of the poster reflects Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola's involvement in the script writing alongside Andrew Cosby. Mignola previously said that his visits to the Hellboy set felt like he was seeing something ripped straight out of the comics for the first time during production. This is certainly exciting for fans of the source material to bring the complicated hero to life in a new way.

Hellboy was originally set to be released in January, but last week it was announced that the release will be pushed back until April 11, 2019. With buzz just getting started for the new Hellboy, the movie will likely benefit from this date change. The comic book adaptation will now head to theaters just one week after Shazam!. With more time to market the film and generate more excitement for the film with teasers such as this, Hellboy could be a huge box office success.

Saw 9 Seems To Be Happening, At Least According To One Star's Divorce Settlement

If there's one thing the horror genre is known for, its sequels. Horror movies are fairly inexpensive to make, so having an iconic franchise or villain will keep fans invested, and therefore give properties long lives. This has surely been the case for the Saw movies, which had an original run of seven films, before recently reviving the torture-heavy franchise with last year's Jigsaw. Despite the years in between each sequel, Jigsaw still managed to make $103 million on a $10 million budget. Rumors immediately began swirling about a ninth movie , and now it's seemingly been confirmed thanks to franchise star Tobin Bell's divorce papers.

Tobin Bell is currently in the midst of divorce proceedings with his wife Elizabeth. The leaked documents (via The Blast) lists a ninth Saw movie as a form of income for the actor. The documents make a brief mention of a new Saw movie, the profits of which should influence both Elizabeth's upcoming spousal payments, as well as her eventual taxes. One excerpt from the suit, lists says that if Bell...

...receives any compensation from any source for his participation in the ninth motion picture in the 'Saw' series ('Saw 9 Pay') at any time, he shall pay [Elizabeth] (or reimburse her for) all of her combined Federal and California income tax liability incurred on the spousal support she receives.

While not exactly a confirmation from Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures, it certainly points to yet another Saw movie coming to theaters to scare the crap out of people, and show plenty of gore. Tobin Bell is no doubt in the earliest of conversations when it comes to making a new Saw movie, because the franchise can't really go on without its only regular character. It also stands to reason that Elizabeth would be privy to Bell's career moves, which is why she's using that information in court. What a complicated situation.

If Saw 9 is indeed coming, this isn't the way the studios intended on breaking the news. If the potential ninth movie follows the franchise's tradition, then we should probably expect the next sequel to arrive in the month of October. If things are really moving forward, it would stand to reason if Saw 9 came in the fall of 2019.

Jigsaw was the most recent installment in the Saw franchise, and once again played with the concept of time in order to keep Tobin Bell's character Jon Kramer in the narrative (he died back in Saw 3). Yet another Jigsaw protegee was revealed, as it turns out the main game of the franchise was set a decade earlier. This opens up the possibility of continuing the killer's work, testing sinners in grisly ways.
