The Magic Kingdom Is Expanding Alcohol Sales

The Magic Kingdom Is Expanding Alcohol Sales

From its inception, nearly 50 years ago, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World did not serve alcohol. However, back in 2012 that changed, and now the places where the park serves alcohol have been expanded. When the high end Be Our Guest restaurant opened in 2012 it was the first location inside the Magic Kingdom to serve adult beverages. Then in 2016, four more table service locations in the park began to serve beer and wine. Now, the two remaining table service locations at the Magic Kingdom now serve some sort of alcohol.

The two brand new locations are The Crystal Palace and The Plaza Restaurant, and, along with Be Our Guest, they join Tony's Town Square, Cinderella's Royal Table, Skipper Canteen, and Liberty Tree Tavern. Each location serves drinks that match the aesthetic of the restaurant, so Tony's Town Square, which serves Italian food, offers Italian beers and wines to go with it. According to The Disney Food Blog, both of the brand new locations will be serving a similar menu of beer and wine, though the Crystal Palace will also offer mimosas, and the Plaza Restaurant will offer sangria.

The inclusion of alcohol has always been a touchy subject for Disney Park purists, as Walt Disney himself always wanted his parks to be alcohol-free. Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida abided by that rule when they were built, but when Epcot opened in 1982, the park, which was half dedicated to a World Showcase, spotlighting other nations of the world, decided to include alcohol from those places as well. Disneyland Paris became the first Magic Kingdom-like park to serve alcohol because it was France and the French would likely riot if wine wasn't available with dinner.

The fact that alcohol is expanding at the Magic Kingdom is clearly an indication that the policy of limiting drinks to restaurants is working. Alcohol is obviously a huge moneymaker for the parks, but that income would be negated if the Magic Kingdom was having significant issues with people who went overboard. It seems like a solid compromise. People who want a glass of wine or beer with dinner can have it, but the people wandering the park don't have to deal with it.

I've recently argued that this restaurant-only policy should make its way to Disneyland, the only remaining park in the U.S. where the general public can't have a glass of wine. If it works well enough at the Magic Kingdom to offer it at every restaurant, it's unlikely that Disneyland would see significant issues overall.

Since this change is simply the expansion of an existing policy, it likely won't see a significant backlash. Of course, any expansion from here, which you have to assume somebody somewhere is considering, would mean bringing alcohol into the main areas of the park. If that happens down the road, you can be sure some people will have a problem.

Disneys New Streaming Service Is Finally Casting Its First Movie

Disneys New Streaming Service Is Finally Casting Its First Movie

As the media landscape continues to change, and an exponentially increasing amount of content competes for our dollars, it takes a lot to make a splash. Yet a cannonball-sized splash is what Disney is expected to make when it launches its own streaming service next year. The Netflix competitor will feature the studio's vast library, as well as new original series and movies made specifically for the platform. As 2019 approaches, one of the first of those original movies has begun casting. Disney has tapped Grace VanderWaal for the lead role in the movie Stargirl.

If you're unfamiliar with that name, that's because this will be Grace VanderWaal's acting debut. The 14-year-old first came onto the scene when she won America's Got Talent two years ago by singing her original songs while playing the ukulele. Since then, she has released an EP and debut album, and she is touring with Imagine Dragons this summer. Stargirl director Julia Hart, whose latest film Fast Color premiered at SXSW this year, was sold on Grace VanderWaal almost from the start. According to Deadline, the young singer beat out 700 other girls to land the lead role of Stargirl.

Stargirl is based on a young adult novel of the same name by author Jerry Spinelli. Told from the point of view of a boy named Leo, Stargirl tells the story of the titular character who, after years of home schooling, enters a public high school. She captures the imaginations of her peers with her eccentricities, kindness and individuality. The character of Stargirl also plays the ukulele, just like Grace VanderWaal. But as with all popular things, there is a backlash and her classmates turn on her, resulting in Leo compelling her to just be normal. The story stresses the importance of individuality and being yourself. Stargirl also spawned a sequel titled Love, Stargirl, so you can bet that may be coming down the line should Stargirl perform well for Disney's streaming service.

Judging by her performance on America's Got Talent, it is clear that Grace VanderWaal has talent, at least in the musical department. If that holds true for acting, and the huge casting process for Stargirl indicates that it does, then this film that holds such an important message for a young audience is off to a good start. The other thing about Stargirl is that it sounds like the right kind of title for this streaming service.

A story like this may not get a lot of traction in the blockbuster-heavy theatrical release slate, but it will have an opportunity to find its audience on Disney's streaming platform. Sweet stories with this kind of message actually remind me of Disney Channel's Original Movies that once were proving grounds for young stars. It is cool that among the Star Wars series and Marvel properties that will anchor the service, there is still room for these types of stories.

Stargirl will be shot in Arizona and New Mexico, with principal photography set to begin on September 24. For all the latest on Disney's upcoming streaming service and children reminding you how talentless you are, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Jason Momoa Doesn't Blame Henry Cavill Or Ben Affleck If They're Done With DCEU

Jason Momoa Doesn't Blame Henry Cavill Or Ben Affleck If They're Done With DCEU

The future of the DC movie universe is far from clear in regards to two major characters. Whether or not we'll ever see Henry Cavill as Superman or Ben Affleck as Batman again in a DC movie is unknown. However, if they are both, in fact, done with their runs, Aquaman 's Jason Momoa says he doesn't hold it against them. While it sounds like Momoa would love to work with them both again, if that doesn't happen he understands that each of them needs to do whatever it is they need to do. According to Momoa...

If they're both out, then listen: It's just the place they're at in their careers. I mean, how many has Henry done? He's done three? Yeah, I mean, like, you want to move on. I think if I did... shit, I have done three. ... I mean, Henry wants to just expand on something. Ben is an amazing director that is of age, and probably he's done enough. I don't know how to speak on behalf of them, but I had the time of my life [on 'Justice League'].

Of course, either Jason Momoa doesn't know what's really going on with the greater DCEU or he's expected to pretend like he doesn't. Even if he has inside info, and it certainly sounds like what he tells Huffington Post that he doesn't, he's not going to be the one to spill the beans. There will be official channels when these sorts of things are done.

Nothing within DC's film universe is cut and dried, but rumors have circulated in the past few months that Henry Cavill is actually done playing Superman. While there have been reports that this isn't the case, what does seem clear is that there no plans for new Superman movies in the near future so we won't be seeing Cavill play Superman, even if he technically still has the job.

The conversation regarding Ben Affleck's Batman is a bit different. We know that in that case there is a Batman movie on the way, Matt Reeves has been working on a script and is set to direct. Of course, the fact that Ben Affleck himself was going to write and direct the film, but decided to step away, has made fans wonder if he'll still show up in front of the camera. Everybody involved has been fairly cagey in their responses when asked if Affleck would be back. Nothing definitive has been said one way or the other.

In the end, Jason Momoa's comments are just reflective of the fact that, at the end of the day, making movies is a job, and we all want our careers to fulfilling in some way, and it's possible that both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck have just decided that they'd rather do something else.

With a Batman movie on the way, we'll almost certainly know what's up with that character before we get anything definitive on Superman. Until then, we know we'll have two other Justice League members to keep us entertained, as Aquaman is only a couple of weeks away and Wonder Woman 1984 is coming after that.
