Why Brie Larson Was Hesitant To Star In Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is a huge movie for Marvel Studios. Marvel's first female-led solo superhero movie is introducing the character of Carol Danvers, who will be one of, if not the most powerful heroes in the MCU. So finding the right actress to play this badass leader was critical, as she will likely play a huge role in Phase Four and beyond. Marvel scored a huge coup when it landed Oscar winner Brie Larson in the role. Brie Larson seemed like a great choice for the character, and instantly upped the expectations for the film. But the actress wasn't so sure about taking on the role in the beginning. Brie Larson was interested, but hesitant, as she explained:

I never saw myself doing something like this, mostly because I like being anonymous. I like disappearing into characters, and I always felt like if I was out in the public eye too much, it potentially limits you in the future.

Brie Larson is quickly becoming a household name, and certainly will be after Captain Marvel is released, but it wasn't that long ago that she was relatively unknown to wider audiences. Although she has been acting for a long time, prior to being cast as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson's most notable film roles were in small acclaimed films like The Spectacular Now, Short Term 12 and Room. So going from films like that to giant blockbuster franchises, as she did in Kong: Skull Island, is a huge leap. And based on her comments to Entertainment Weekly, it sounds like that gave her pause.

Brie Larson was previously able to disappear into characters and just be another actress, albeit an acclaimed one. This gave her flexibility. The Captain Marvel role launches her out of anonymity and into the unforgiving lights of stardom. By taking the role, it is now her calling card and the thing she is most known for, increasing her exposure exponentially and while that provides huge opportunities. But there are caveats that come with that level of fame, and the actress understandably wasn't so sure she wanted to be constrained by them. Obviously, Brie Larson eventually came around to star in the film and the reason she did was because of the kind of character Carol Danvers is, as she explained:

Just seeing a character who says how she feels and says what's on her mind and doesn't let people stand in her way is incredibly empowering.

Captain Marvel is a badass and a hothead who does what she thinks is right no matter what. This should make for some entertaining exchanges with the rest of the MCU's giant egos, and it is what makes Carol Danvers such an interesting character. Like many great Marvel heroes, she is incredibly heroic and deeply flawed. The richness of the character is what helped Brie Larson to get past her initial hesitation and say yes to the Kree suit. Speaking of that Kree suit, yesterday we got our first look at Brie Larson in Captain Marvel in the film's first official images.

Captain Marvel jets into theaters on March 8, 2019. There's plenty of good stuff still heading to theaters this year though. Check it out in our release schedule.
