Quentin Tarantino Teases Manson Family Movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
It has been a few years since Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight debuted in theaters, and many film buffs are already dying to see what he's cooking up next. With over a year to go until Once Upon a Time in Hollywood debuts, we're still putting the pieces together to get a better sense of what Tarantino's vision of 1960s Los Angeles will look like. On that note, the Pulp Fiction director took the stage at Sony's CinemaCon panel and described the film as a wholly transformative take on Tinseltown's gritty counterculture. Tarantino explained:
It's very hush-hush and top secret. But I can tell you that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes place in 1969, at the height of the counterculture hippie revolution and the height of new Hollywood. Street by street, block by block, we'll transform Los Angeles into the Hollywood of 1969.
Quentin Tarantino has played with period pieces in the past. His work on Inglourious Basterds showed us what he could do with the Golden Age of cinema by telling a story set in World War II, and Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight both showed what he could do in the western realm. Now, with Once Upon Time in Hollywood, it looks like he's going to take an in-depth look at 1960s Los Angeles and deconstruct hippie counterculture, with a specific emphasis on the Manson Family, though we're still not sure how much Charles Manson will factor into the plot.
Of course, that's not the only notable tidbit of information about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to come out of Sony's CinemaCon panel. In addition to the overall description of how Tarantino will present Los Angeles in the film, the panel also doubled down on the confirmation that the director would once again team up with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Moreover, others associated with the development and upcoming production of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood had some great things to say about where Quentin Tarantino plans to take this story. Specifically, Sony Pictures Chairman Tim Rothman addressed the quality of the script and determined that it is the best screenplay that he has read in his three decades in the film industry. We still don't know much about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but this bodes incredibly well for the project's potential to make an impression on audiences.
