The First Curse Of La Llorona Trailer Is Tense And Terrifying

The Conjuring franchise is one of the strongest names in cinematic horror right now. While The Curse of La Llorona isn't a part of that particular franchise, it does boast many of the names that made those films successful. After seeing the first trailer, it's possible they could have another major horror hit on their hands. It doesn't just tease us with tension but puts us right in the middle of the terror. Check it out.

The trailer opens with a woman, being played by Linda Cardellini, who is asking a priest about somebody called La Llorona. It sounds like she's something of a boogeyman in Mexican circles, but this priest doesn't necessarily believe she's entirely a myth. From there, we move to the scene of a crime where a woman is being taken away for the deaths of her children, though she blames the eponymous La Llorona.

Next, we get an extended sequence where a boy sees the woman in question and tries to keep her from getting into the car where he and his sister are hiding. The tension builds as La Llorona tries to get into the car by simply rolling down the windows, making the kid probably wish his mom had sprung for the power windows on the family car, though the film is set in the 1970s, so maybe that wasn't an option. The trailer wraps when we see Llorona once more, looking terrifying and making you jump.

It's an effective trailer, largely because rather than cutting between one jump scare moment and the next, it gives us an extended sequence and lets the tension build naturally. It shows confidence in the film that if horror fans get a real taste of what the movie really has to offer, the filmmakers believe they will come to see the rest.

According to the plot summary, La Llorona is a woman who drowned her own children in a jealous rage, and now searches the world for new children to replace them. She's an actual character in Mexican folklore, which means many in the audience will already be familiar with her. Putting kids at the center of the terror is likely to only increase the tension for many.

The Curse of La Llorona will be the directing debut of Michael Chaves, but he's already set to direct The Conjuring 3, which shows that the team behind that franchise has serious confidence in him. That team includes James Wan, who is a producer of The Curse of La Llorona, alongside Emile Gladstone and Gary Dauberman, whose horror film credits include co-writing the screenplay to both IT and the upcoming IT Chapter 2 as well as directing the next entry in the Annabelle series.

Thanks to movies like the Conjuring series it feels like horror is going through something of a renaissance. While not every movie, even in that franchise, has been a runaway hit, it's clear that there are some talented filmmakers committed to making quality movies in a genre which is so often overlooked.

While many are gearing up to go heavy into horror right now with Halloween on the horizon, and also Halloween on the horizon, we'll have to make due with only the trailer for The Curse of La Llorona, as the movie itself won't hit until next April.

The first trailer is an effective one, keeping the plot simple and showcasing a particularly tense scene. Watch it below. By the looks of the trailer, The Curse of La Llorona appears to be your standard New Line horror movie, complete with jumpscares, screaming children, and a "From Producer James Wan" title card, but I'm hoping that's just the way Warner Bros. is marketing this thing and the movie itself isn't as generic as this trailer makes it seem.

One Marvel Character Tom Holland Wants Spider-Man To Meet

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to come together like never before with the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Heroes who have never met will finally cross paths, which will likely make for some delightful chemistry, as well as some clashes. There's a lot to look forward to in the film, and it sounds like one introduction that Spider-Man: Homecoming actor Tom Holland wants to see at some point in the future is a moment between Peter Parker and Black Panther's Shuri. In a recent interview, Holland explained:

I think Peter would love it. There's some great moments in the comics where Peter ends up there. And Letitia and I have become really good friends over the last year and a bit. It would be brilliant to have our characters meet up, it would be so funny. She's brilliant in the movie, she's actually my favorite part of Black Panther.

It sounds like Tom Holland is just as intrigued by the possibility of working with Shuri actress Letitia Wright as Peter Parker would be about meeting Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two actors have apparently become good friends over the course of the last year (working on one of the biggest movies ever made will do that), and Holland wants to see Peter and Shuri team up at some point. After all, there's already precedent for it in the comics, and Holland appears to think that the combination of their characters could make for some solid comedic moments. Holland doesn't specify if he wants to see this crossover happen in Avengers: Infinity War (they're both in the movie, making it technically feasible) or a future MCU outing, but he nevertheless seems excited by any situation that will bring Peter and Shuri together.

Tom Holland doesn't offer up a way for Peter Parker and Shuri to meet in his interview with EW, but the logistics are already in place to make it a possibility. At the end of Black Panther, Shuri finds herself entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing an advanced science center in Oakland, which is precisely the type of place that Peter Parker would probably like to go if he continues to work for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) for the foreseeable future. Shuri is responsible for making some excellent Wakandan gadgets in Black Panther, and she could probably help Peter out with his own scrappy, DIY Spider-themed gadgets.

There's also the matter of Shuri and Peter Parker bonding over their shared youth. The Avengers roster primarily consists of older heroes like Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), but Shuri and Peter Parker stand out because they are both teenagers. Aside from Spider-Man: Homecoming, youth is something that hasn't been thoroughly explored in Marvel movies yet (unless you count Teen Groot), so it stands to reason that Shuri and Peter might naturally gravitate towards one another if they find themselves formally introduced.

Peter Parker and Shuri will make their next appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Avengers: Infinity War debuts in theaters next month on April 27. Crazy Rich Asians Was A Total Failure In China

Crazy Rich Asians had a -- wait for it -- crazy poor debut in China. That's either very surprising or totally expected, depending on your vantage point. It's easy to play Monday morning quarterback, but if the box office were simple to predict, everyone would have a hit every time in every market.

There was speculation, and of course hope from the filmmakers, that the largest Asian nation might embrace the U.S. movie with an all-Asian cast. Instead, China had no interest in the film, which opened in eighth place with only $1.2 million.

Just quickly compare that to Venom, which has been cleaning up in China, adding another $12.3 million this weekend. According to THR, its 24-day total is $262.2 million. That's just in China.

China currently has the second-biggest box office in the world, and success stories like Venom have shown how much money films can pick up there if the Chinese audience is engaged.

But it was clear to exhibitors over the weekend that Chinese moviegoers were not into Crazy Rich Asians. The film made less than $500,000 on Friday. Theaters reacted by pulling it from screens across the weekend, which wouldn't help its box office gross, but clearly the bigger problem was apathy from the audience.

Why? Well, it couldn't help that the film came out four months ago here. Maybe they waited too long to release it in China. It wasn't clear if the movie would even open in China at all, considering China's strict content regulators. Also, the storyline focused on Asian-Americans, wealth in Singapore, culture clashes, and what was perceived to some as Asian stereotypes. Apparently none of that resonated with the Chinese public.

Most of China's films already feature all-Chinese or all-Asian casts, so it wasn't a novelty in that market, the way it was in North America. For example, THR reports that the "edgy local dramedy" A Cool Fish held on to its top spot on the Chinese box office chart this weekend, earning $24.2 million. But even Rowan Atkinson's Johnny English Strikes Again did nearly five times the business of Crazy Rich Asians, picking up $5.1 million.

Comic book films have had great success in China -- see Venom again, but also Justice League, which picked up $106 million from China alone -- and DC plans to capitalize on that with Aquaman. The film already had a big premiere in Beijing and it will open this Friday in China, two weeks before we get it on December 21 in North America.

Crazy Rich Asians has made $238 million so far, from what BoxOfficeMojo reports as a $30 million production budget. So it was a success in general, if not in China. With a domestic take of $174 million, it was the highest-grossing romantic comedy in the North American market in 10 years. A sequel to the romantic comedy is in development, based on the second book by Kevin Kwan.

That sequel -- China Rich Girlfriend -- does not have a release date at this point, and actress Constance Wu warned that director Jon M. Chu's schedule may delay it for a bit. Here's what we do know is ahead on the film schedule for 2019.
