Why Spider-Man: Far From Home Is Set In Europe, According To Kevin Feige
Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War to follow!
Production is gearing up for Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spidey's sophomore MCU film and the first movie out of the gate in the mysterious Phase 4. This time around, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will be venturing far beyond the boroughs of New York City. Spider-Man: Far From Home is at least partially set in Europe and will find Tom Holland's Wall-Crawler on an international adventure. But why is New York's resident crime fighter straying so far from home (pun intended)? Well, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige provided some insight in his usual cagey fashion, saying:
Well, when does that movie take place? We know it's the summer. I think it's summer vacation. I think he's going to Europe with his friends. I don't know what summer... I mean, I do know [but you don't].
Kevin Feige must derive great pleasure in messing with fans by answering questions with answers that simply raise more questions. It sounds like Spider-Man: Far From Home is set in Europe because Peter Parker will be getting a much needed break from high school and the rigors of superhero life in New York City as he heads off on a summer trip abroad. It's unclear which friends he'll be going with or if this is part of a school trip, but it at least gives us the context in which this story will take place. The real tricky thing about Peter Parker going to Europe over the summer is that he is currently dead, so he'll need to be resurrected beforehand. This also represents a challenge for marketing this movie considering that it comes out two months after Avengers 4.
Speaking with io9, Kevin Feige seems to be inferring that although the movie is taking place over the summer, we don't know which summer. So it is possible that he means that Far From Home takes place before the events of Avengers: Infinity War. However, I think this is a case of misdirection. We've heard in the past that Avengers 4 will lead right in to the Homecoming sequel, so a prequel seems unlikely. However, the Lost comparison has been made for Avengers 4, and Kevin Feige has said not to make assumptions about who is alive in Phase 4. So maybe we are dealing with an alternate reality or timeline situation here. If that's the case, Spidey may not only be far from home geographically, but also spatially and temporally.
Regardless of what reality he gets to visit Europe in, I really like the idea of Peter Parker on a summer vacation overseas. Spider-Man visited Washington D.C. in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and in Avengers: Infinity War he traveled to the alien world of Titan, but he still hasn't been to Europe. The international flavor will help differentiate this movie from the other films starring the Web-Slinger that came before. Maybe Peter Parker can even get in some Eurotrip type fun before Mysterio shows up to ruin his vacation.
